Spring 2013 Meeting

Northern Ohio Technical Services Librarians is pleased to present a program on RDA Authorities and Implementation. Our meeting will be in two parts: a morning workshop session on RDA authorities, presented and taught by Paul Frank; and an afternoon presentation on RDA implementation for libraries both large and small, given by Christopher Cronin. April 5th is just days after Day 1 for RDA. It’s time to get practical with the RDA authorities! Come join NOTSL’s program for managing your transition.

Paul Frank from the Library of Congress will talk about name authority records in RDA, the current state of NACO training, major differences between AACR2 and RDA name headings, and will provide guidance for non-NACO catalogers for constructing RDA name headings.

Chris Cronin from the University of Chicago Library will talk about managing the transition to RDA in your library.

The meeting will take place at Cleveland State University. Watch for more detailed information as it becomes available.

Fall 2012 Meeting

NOTSL will hold its Fall Meeting at the Kent State University Main Campus Student Center. The program, entitled “The Real Transformers: How E-Resources are Shaping Technical Services,” will focus on how e-resources are changing technical services, particularly in regards to staffing, workflow, budget, and collection management. We will have two keynote speakers: Sara Simpson, Technical Services Manager from the Tulsa City-County Library; and Deberah England, Electronic Resources Librarian at Wright State University. Sara Simpson will speak on e-resources workflows, staffing, and budget as they pertain to public libraries. Deberah England will speak on managing e-resources within academic technical services areas. In the afternoon, we will have a panel discussion with speakers addressing e-resources in regards to Overdrive, ContentDM, and record loading and management. Panelists will be Patricia Lowrey (Cleveland Public Library), Ron Gardner (OCLC), and Carrie Preston (Ohio University).

Spring 2012 Meeting

NOTSL (Northern Ohio Technical Services Librarians) is pleased to present a program focusing on preparation for RDA implementation. The Library of Congress, and other national and international libraries, will fully implement Resource Description and Access (RDA) as the replacement for AACR2 on March 31, 2013. The Library of Congress has issued a long range training plan for 2012, which outlines the steps it will be taking to train and prepare their staff for this change. While a select group of libraries participated, either formally or informally, in the RDA test in Fall 2010, many libraries have done very little to prepare their staff and adjust their workflows for incorporating RDA. The goal of this NOTSL workshop is to make libraries aware of the current national plans for RDA implementation and to help them begin their own preparation process. Our speakers will focus on topics such as the current status of preparation for RDA at the national library level, the issues surrounding staff training and workflow planning for RDA implementation, and will offer an in-detail examination of the impact of RDA on cataloging audio-visual materials.

NOTSL will hold its spring meeting on Friday, April 27, 2012. Our topic is: “RDA is coming. How ready are you?”

Our keynote speaker will be Chris Oliver, Coordinator of Cataloguing and Authorities, McGill University, former Chair of the Canadian Committee on Cataloguing, current Copy Editor for RDA, appointed by ALA Publications and charged with revising RDA wording to make it understandable. Chris is also the author of “Introducing RDA: a guide to the basics.”

We are also very pleased to be able to present Peter Lisius, Music and Media Catalog Librarian, Kent State University Libraries. Peter will discuss RDA for cataloging music and A-V materials.

Our third speaker is Erin Stalberg, Director of Discovery and Access at Mt. Holyoke College, former Head of Metadata and Cataloging at North Carolina State University. Erin will focus on managing change, and training for RDA.

Registration will available on Wednesday, March 14th.
